The question on everyone’s mind when the step out of their home these days is the same: will I be safe from COVID-19 at my destination? If you’re headed to a dental practice, you can confidently answer yes. Since dentists started reopening their practices, they have been taking extra steps to keep the virus away from their patients. One way they have been doing this is by using new pieces of protective equipment. This article will detail four of the most common ones you’ll see at your next appointment with your dentist.
1. Face Masks
When you first enter a dental practice, you’ll probably notice that every member of the team is now wearing a mask over their mouth and nose. Face masks are some of the most critical tools used to prevent the spread of COVID-19, as they severely limit the release of viral droplets. Members of the team who don’t provide care will usually be wearing ASTM Level 3 masks, while those who carry out procedures will be wearing even more powerful N95 masks.
2. Face Shields
Many dental procedures have the ability to push viral droplets out of patients mouths and into the air. Dental team members don’t want the virus to land on exposed areas of their face, so they are utilizing clear plastic face shields during all procedures. By using them, they can prevent germs from moving to their hands in the event they touch their face.
3. Single Use Body Coverings
It’s not entirely clear whether or not COVID-19 can survive on surfaces for very long, but dental teams aren’t taking any chances. Many practices are requiring staff members to wear full body coverings over their clothes. At the end of each patient visit, these coverings are thrown away to keep germs from moving between treatment rooms.
4. Plastic Guards
At the front desk area, you may see a tall plastic barrier between you and a dental team member. Referred to as a “sneeze guard,” this divider plays a crucial role in stopping the spread of COVID-19. In the event a face mask does let some viral particles through, the plastic guard prevents them from reaching another person. Instead, they land on the plastic, and a team member can safely disinfect it later.
Protective equipment is just one of the ways dentists are keeping their practices disease free during the COVID-19 pandemic. Rest assured, new safety measures won’t get in the way of you receiving the excellent dental care you deserve. If anything, they will help create an environment that is cleaner and safer for you than the one you’ve experienced during previous visits.
